History of The Eesley Mill
|
John F. Eesley, an influential local entrepeneur and industrialist, first came to Plainwell from Birmingham, Michigan and settled in the area in 1887. Eesley's home was located at 211 West Bridge St.
A portion of the Eesley Mill, built in 1869 was originally a roller rink until Eesley Purchased it in 1887 and converted it into the Sunshine Flour Mill. Originally located at 119 West Bridge Street, it was divided into two sections and moved to 717 E. Bridge in 1903 and combined with an existing Grain Elevator Company. At one time the mill was reputed to be the second largest producer of buckwheat flour in the United States. It had an output of 60 barrells of flour per day that was marketed in the east under the name Sunshine Brand Flour.
